The Socialists Artists Alliance is a cross-country and cross-border network of anti-capitalist arts makers.

Our Mission

The Socialists Artists Alliance is a cross-country and cross-border network of anti-capitalist arts makers. We are a coalition of Marxist/socialist/communist/anarchist theater makers, visual artists, dancers, musicians, and artists of all other mediums. It is our goal as socialists and as artists to strengthen the existing role of the arts in radically reimagining society post-capitalism, and to help artists locate both kindred-spirited comrades and the resources needed to make art along the road to revolution. The Alliance will operate horizontally rather than as a hierarchical membership organization, a nexus of individual artists and arts collectives working to both create anti-capitalist, revolutionary art, and organizing towards socialism in local communities. Our founding is focused on four tenets:

  • Connecting artists with each other, across the country and internationally. Creating art and a mass movement for societal change both require deep connections with other humans; the Artists Alliance will facilitate making contact, so that leftist artists may become a better organized, interdependent cadre, while also finding potential creative partners for personal projects.
  • Advocating for artists’ rights not merely within the confines of a profit-driven capitalist society, but in order to recreate a definition of “value” in society that prioritizes the unquantifiable art and artistic process over quantitative goals and monetary profits.
  • Work towards funding and/or producing artworks under the Socialist Artists Alliance umbrella.
  • Advocating and agitating in communities and ultimately nationally and globally for specific socialist policies that are critical to the flourishing of artistic production, beginning with (but in no way limited to) the decommodification of land, housing, and other spaces. It is our ultimate goal to open free cooperative studio spaces and/or artist housing.

Art is always and everywhere the secret confession, and at the same time the immortal movement of its time.
— Karl Marx
